THIS WORKS (Part One of Three)

Editor's Note: How many times are we charged with
changing how our players, assistant coaches,or even
ourselves feel about something?  We all have run into
situations where we have difficulty getting what we
need done, done.  In these times, it's usually because
either our players or assistants just don't feel like
doing what we need them to do.  Yes, you can force your
players/assistants to do whatever it is you feel needs
done-but if you do, they're most times going to do as
little as they need to do to "shut you up".  The result?
A poor effort that doesn't really achieve what you had
envisioned, which leads to a good deal of frustration
on your part.  Sound familiar?  In this three part
article, Rob Gilbert explains, in very simple terms,
the psychology behind how you can motivate those you
need to get things done for you.  Or, as I mentioned
above, even yourself!


QUESTION: What keeps you from getting what you
really want?

What prevents you from:

1. Getting in better shape?
2. Losing weight?
3. Getting better grades?
4. Earning more money?
5. Winning more?

What stops you? What stands in your way?

ANSWER: You! You’re getting in your own way. But
what specifically is keeping you from getting
what you really want?

ANSWER: YOUR FEELINGS!

Your feelings get in your way and stop you. Your
feelings keep you from getting what you really
want. I’ll bet you say things to yourself like:

1. “I don’t feel like working out.”
2. “I don’t feel like dieting.”
3. “I don’t feel like studying.”
4. “I don’t feel like going to practice.”

Imagine how successful you would be if you could
only overcome these temporary negative feelings?

Here’s the crucial question . . .

How do you change your feelings?

I’m not talking about feelings like the
deep-seated resentment you may have for your
third-grade teacher. I’m talking about feelings
you have in the moment; the feelings that you
have right here and right now.

Suppose that right now, you’re saying something
to yourself like:

“I don’t want to go to the gym.”

or..

“I don’t want to go to school.”

or..

“I don’t want to go to work.”

Here’s the secret:
